Bucolic and chic
In both France and Switzerland and overlooked by the Alps, Lake Geneva can be admired from its panoramic banks, whilst enjoying its elegant way of life. The perfect combination of a bucolic setting and the sophistication of a luxury holiday destination.
On the French side, hop on the funicular railway in Thonon-les-Bains to get a view of the lake from on high. Then head to the sandy beach in Excenevex which will surprise you with its Mediterranean feel. Wander through the narrow streets or around the port of the medieval village of Yvoire, recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in France. Tempted by a wellness stay in a Belle Epoque setting? Choose Evian, with its thermal spa and its 18-hole golf course, renowned the world over as much for its stunning location as for the quality of its course layout, which the top professional women golfers take on each year.
On the Swiss side, there is of course cosmopolitan Geneva, for a stay combining culture, sport, nature and city life. A little further to the north, built on the hillside, Lausanne is charming town, with its beautiful historic centre and its streets which gently slope down towards the lake. The capital of Vaud is also a good opportunity to visit some museums, amongst the top choices are the Art Brut museum, or with a completely different theme, the Olympic Games museum. Finally, extend your stay as far as Montreux - for the jazz festival, to visit the castle, the hillsides, or just simply for the view!
